Dona Elsa

Our Philosophy

How we started

It all began back in the 80's when we bought a plot of farmland nestled in a valley on the sunshine coast of the Algarve, Portugal. Not only did the land fall within an ecological reserve, but it also had over 200 citrus trees and the most fertile soil for miles around. This combination, together with abundant sunshine for most of the year, produced fruit and vegetables of astounding quality and flavour. Our first pot of orange jam bubbled away and Dona Elsa® was born.

We were determined, right from the beginning, to nurture and protect the profusion of bird and insect species that breezed in and out of our orchards. For this reason, we do not use any chemicals or synthetic fertilizers on our land. We let nature take it's rightful course and we strongly believe that this gentle farming method enhances the flavour of our crops even further, not to mention the abundance of chirping birds!

Who we are

We are a family run business and have been preserving fruit and vegetables here on our farm for over 25 years. We grow it, we preserve it. All our fruit and vegetables are sun-ripened and are harvested just at the right moment when they are mature and bursting with flavour. We are passionate about sharing these sumptuous tastes with the rest of the world; why not try our organic orange jam with whiskey, green fig jam or our sweet honey-coloured quince jelly. We are a small concern and because of this we put an incredible amount of love and effort into every jar.
